What you are looking at
The façade of Rouen Cathedral faces us head on, cropped at the sides, its central gable and spire rising into a pale sky. The light is soft and veiled, neither the hard sun of the midday canvases nor the blue of dawn. Monet paints the stone in muted ocher, straw, putty gray and touches of dusty gold, with cooler gray-blue and lavender in the recesses. At the upper left, behind the edge of the Tour Saint-Romain, the sky takes on a faint greenish tint; elsewhere it is a warm cream.
The great rose window above the central portal is a dark gray-blue oval, the deepest tone in the picture, and the slender gable in front of it is drawn in pale strokes. The clock dial at its base is a small, bright disk. Below, the three portals sink into soft brown and mauve shadow. The whole canvas has an almost uniform middle tone, as if seen through a light haze: perhaps the hour after sunrise when the sun is up but filtered by mist or high cloud.
The signature, Claude Monet, with a date, is at lower left.
Rouen, 1893
Claude Monet painted the cathedral in two campaigns in Rouen, in early 1892 and early 1893, renting rooms around the square so he could watch the light move across the west front. He worked on many canvases at once, assigning each to a particular effect, and finished them at Giverny in 1894. Wikidata dates the Weimar canvas to the 1893 campaign. Twenty of the paintings were exhibited at Durand-Ruel's gallery in Paris in 1895; see the Rouen Cathedral series.
How it was painted
The surface is the dense, encrusted paste typical of the series, worked in many layers of short, dry strokes. Monet keeps the color range narrow and earthy, which is unusual: most of the cathedrals push toward blue, pink or gold, but this one holds close to the natural color of weathered limestone. The variety comes from small shifts of temperature, a warmer ocher beside a cooler gray, and from the broken, granular texture.
How this version differs
Its nearest relative is the Musée d'Orsay's Portal, Front View (Harmonie brune), the other earthy, brownish canvas in the series, though the Orsay picture is darker and heavier. Against the cool silver of the Orsay's Portal, Grey Weather the Weimar canvas is warmer; against the sunlit Rouen Cathedral, Façade in Boston it is muted and quiet. It records the in-between light that much of the series skips over, neither weather nor time of day in its extreme form.
Looking closely
The green tint at the upper left, where the sky meets the edge of the tower, is a small but telling detail. Monet uses it to cool the sky next to the warm stone, a trick of complementary color he relied on throughout the series. At the bottom, the doors of the three portals are painted in deep brown and violet with a few warmer flecks, and the signature sits in the shadow at lower left.
Ownership and where to see it
Catalogued as Wildenstein 1357, the painting belongs to the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, the foundation that runs Weimar's historic museums and palaces (inventory G 541), and is associated with the collections at Schloss Weimar, the city palace. Weimar was an early center for modern French art in Germany around 1900. The museum's published details on the painting's provenance are limited, and gallery displays at the palace have been affected by renovation, so check before visiting.
