The Garden of Death is a Finnish work of art by symbolist painter Hugo Simberg.
Many of Simberg’s paintings depict a gloomy, somewhat cynical outlook on life, mostly described in otherworldly scenes. Here, the central figures remind us of the Grim Reaper, but are seen tending to gardens of life, paradoxically symbolic of renewal and birth.
In what can only be described as everyday pottering around, we see each of the three Grims attending their own gardens in their own ways, perhaps suggesting that life goes on even as death gets busy around us.
