Melancholy is a painting by one of the greats: Norwegian artist, Edvard Munch.
Munch painted multiple versions of this expressionist work in oil on canvas between 1891–1893.
Here, we see a man of unknown age (probably in his late 20s) sitting at the edge of a shoreline, clearly pensive and deep in thought. It is only because the work is named “Melancholy” that we are sure he feels that way.
Munch is well-known for his tragic outlook on life, brought on by childhood fears of inheriting a dreaded disease from his ancestors.
