The Birth of Venus (also known as La Naissance de Vénus) is said to be one of 19th-century painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau’s most famous works.
Despite its title, it actually depicts Venus’ transportation in a shell as a fully mature woman from the sea (not her actual birth) to Cyprus. Here, Venus is considered to be the epitome of Classical Greek and Roman form and beauty, rivaling Venus de Milo.
