Premier Deuil (also known as The First Mourning) is an oil on canvas that highlights the grief of the artist at the death of his second son.

Painted in 1888, artist William-Adolphe Bouguereau uses the first human death recorded in the Bible to display Adam and Eve’s mourning after finding the body of their son Abel, who had just been murdered by Cain.

Premier Deuil is on display in the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
