Murdered for her religious beliefs, Saint Catherine of Alexandria was a virgin martyr of the 4th Century. She is depicted here by artist Caravaggio, surrounded by everything that defined her and made her who she was.
Confiding in her priest, Maximus, what she was feeling and about her Christianity, Catherine converted most of his followers, including his empress and the leader of his armies.
Maximus had Catherine executed, as well as her converts. He also executed his partner, and had Catherine put to death by beheading her on a spiked wheel.
