Alexandre Cabanel’s Fallen Angel is perceived to be none other than Lucifer.
The work was inspired by John Milton’s 1667 poem, Paradise Lost. Milton, an English writer and poet, discusses biblical narratives that center around Adam and Eve, their “disobedience”, and Lucifer’s “rebellion” against God.
Lucifer appears resentful and tensed up, sullen and filled with (possible) hatred for the ousting. Behind him, we see several angels flying, floating, and co-mingling, while also seemingly rejoicing and celebrating Lucifer’s fall.
