Jago Jacopo Cardillo is a very young Italian artist who created Pietà, a contemporary artwork in plaster and marble, in Naples during the first period of lockdown early in 2020.
His sculpture differs from the classical iconography of Pietà. Although the male figure bears a striking resemblance to the artist, it is not a self-portrait.
The realistic suffering shown by the statue shows a deep sorrow and the despair of a young man who has lost a beloved. He holds her body strongly and desperately in his arms, weeping for the loss.
The Pietà sculpture is displayed in the Chapel of the Crucifix of the Chiesa di Santa Maria in Montesanto.
